Production Editor

Overview

Description: Scribe is seeking a Production Editor who will oversee editorial services, working out of either our Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, or Fort Lauderdale, Florida, office. Candidates must be well-organized, tech-savvy, and experienced book editors. The Production Editor will be responsible for project scheduling and interactions with other departments, clients, and authors. The Production Editor will work closely with other staff in the development of processes and procedures and assist with the training of our editorial staff.

Duties

  • Ensure that the copyediting that Scribe performs is completed on time, within budget, and to the clients’ expectations
  • Review works in progress and make necessary changes to scheduling
  • Lead, direct, and oversee the editorial development of projects
  • Participate in the improvement of internal processes and procedures for the editorial team
  • Monitor project costs to ensure budgets remain on track
  • Work with other staff at varying points throughout the editorial production process
  • Update our project management system and keep records current and accurate
  • Maintain communication with clients and authors
  • Assign and schedule incoming copyediting and proofreading work
  • Review copyediting and proofreading samples
  • Work within Scribe’s publishing systems to traffic/monitor work and schedules

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in English or a related field
  • Minimum three years of experience performing project management duties, preferably in a book publishing environment

Overview

For this entry-level position, we seek a person to assist in the production of print or electronic books. Initially, the Assistant Electronic Book Producer will learn how to develop electronic and print books. We will train you in all aspects of the work to be performed. Currently, we are working remotely. But the position will be full time in either our Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, or Fort Lauderdale, Florida, office (once we reopen). If you are excited by the process of book publishing, the position offers an excellent entry point and learning environment where you can develop your skills and advance to several positions, including Electronic Book Developer.

The ability to use computers efficiently and the desire to develop technical skills are essential for this position. The main qualification we are looking for is an aptitude for text-based technologies (text editing, markup languages, XML, HTML, simple scripting). A solid interest in book publishing is also necessary.

Initially, new employees learn the foundational elements of modern publishing: applying XML, e-book development, basic knowledge of the software commonly used in the industry, and the book publishing process. Then we will help cultivate your production skills so that you can fulfill one of the available production positions.

Compensation will increase as your skills advance and you gain greater responsibilities in Scribe.

Scribe is seeking a Junior Developer to help advance our Well-Formed Document Workflow. Candidates must be well organized and self-directed and have excellent computer and problem-solving skills. Applicants must be willing to learn specific frameworks and develop these skills if hired. Candidates should have an interest in learning the mechanics of files associated with the publishing industry and must be willing to learn the programming environments for interacting with each. While deep prior knowledge of these formats and languages is not a requirement, candidates must be willing to learn these if hired.

Duties

  • Implement bug fixes and develop new features for the tools in Scribe's Well-Formed Document Workflow
  • Work in a testing-driven development environment to improve both customer-facing and internal technology and prevent future bugs
  • Work both independently and collaboratively, using Git version control to contribute to projects
  • Investigate bug reports and support requests, and communicate findings to users clearly
  • Dedicate a portion of the week to answering internal tech support issues
  • Contribute to big-picture ideas and be proactive about identifying solutions to problems
  • Manage file archiving

Qualifications

  • Know how to code in at least one programming language
  • Ability to develop websites using one front-end framework or content management system

Scribe seeks a dynamic, technically savvy salesperson to help promote our services and Well-Formed Document Workflow. The position can vary from full-time in-house staff to remote representative. The structure of compensation is flexible but is ultimately tied to sales success.

We have been successful because we bring a distinctive approach to the services we offer and our method to sell and market those services. To help maximize success, the Sales Representative will be assisted by Scribe staff, especially the other sales staff, in carrying out her/his responsibilities.
