The Scribe Add-In Lite (SAI Lite) is a template developed for the Microsoft Word environment.

The SAI Lite provides a tool set for any user to automate some common tasks and easily incorporate ScML into manuscript files.

Download and Install

First-time Installation

The SAI Lite works with the following versions of Word:

  • Word 2007 (PC)
  • Word 2010 (PC)
  • Word 2013 (PC)
  • Word 2016 (PC)
  • Word 2011 (Mac)
  • Word 2016 (Mac)

Save the .zip installation files to a “SAIL” folder on your computer, so all SAI Lite-related files are in one place.

Unzip SAIL-setup.zip and double-click SAIL-setup.doc to open it in Word. You may be prompted to close any open documents.

It may be necessary to “enable macros” after opening SAI-setup. If so, simply click the Enable Macros button when it appears.

Fill in the registration information and review the terms. Select I Agree and click OK to send your registration to Scribe (requires an Internet connection; a web browser will open, and your registration information will be passed to Scribe’s Learning Site).

You will get a confirmation that the SAI Lite installed successfully. When you click OK, Word will close automatically.

Seeing and Using the SAI Lite Toolbar

Windows

The installation process embeds an SAI Lite template in Word. Using the SAI Lite on a Windows-based PC is as easy as creating a new document using the SAI Lite template.

Word 2007/2010

Navigate to the SAI Lite template as follows:

File → New → My Templates → SAIL.dotm

  • Under File, if you click New, you should see a list of Available Templates. Click My Templates and choose SAIL.dotm. This will create a new document based on the SAI Lite template, and Word’s Styles pane will appear along the right side of the document.

Word 2013/2016

Navigate to the SAI Lite template as follows:

File → New → Personal → SAIL

  • If you do not see the clickable heading Personal below the online template search bar, do the following: Choose Options > Trust Center and click the Trust Center Settings button. Choose Trusted Locations in the dialog that appears. Find the User Location that is labeled "User Templates". Double-click the location to bring up another dialog that will allow you to copy the folder path (usually something like: C:\Users[username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates\, but it may differ). Choose Cancel twice to return to Word Options. Under Save, paste your location into the Default personal templates location field. You may need to restart Word to see the Personal header. Once it appears, you should be able to access the SAIL without going through this process again. Choosing it will create a new document based on the SAI Lite template, and Word’s Styles pane will appear along the right side of the document.

All PC Versions

  • The SAI Lite should be the second tab in your ribbon (next to File).
  • SAI Lite features only appear when you create a document attached to the template. If you just click the document icon, select File → New, or Control + N, but do not choose the SAIL.dotm template, you will not see the SAI Lite tab on the ribbon.
  • Consult the ReadMe file, which is available from within the SAI Lite, for troubleshooting help; simply click View Readme.

Mac OS

The installation process embeds an SAI Lite template in Word. To see the SAI Lite tool and use it, you just need to create a new document from that template. Once you’ve installed the SAI Lite on your computer, to access the tools, open Word and navigate to the SAI Lite template as follows:

File → New from Template → My Templates → SAIL.dotm

  • Under File, if you click New from Template, you should see a list of Available Templates. Click My Templates and choose SAIL.dotm. This will create a new document based on the SAI Lite template.
  • When you create a new document from the SAI Lite template in this way, a document opens and a separate menu bar will appear at the top of the screen floating between the Word menu ribbon and the top of the document.
  • From this point on, you can work in Word as you normally do, except that now you have the ability to apply structure indicators to whatever content is in the document using the SAI Lite tool.
  • The SAI Lite toolbar only appears when you create a document attached to the template. If you just click the document icon, select File → New, or Control + N, but do not choose the SAIL.dotm template, you will not see the SAI Lite toolbar.
  • Consult the ReadMe file, which is available from within the SAI Lite, for troubleshooting help; simply click View Readme.

Installing Updates

New versions of the SAI Lite may be installed in the same manner. You will be notified when updates become available.

Handling Error Reports

If an Error Report pops up while using the SAI Lite, click OK to view the Error Log. The log text is copiable, so click into the text box, select all text (Ctrl + A) and copy it (Ctrl + C), then paste it (Ctrl + V) into a Word or text document. You will then be able to copy this into your feedback report. When sending feedback to Scribe, including the error log is very helpful. For more information about how to send Scribe feedback, go to Send Feedback.
